Wolves have returned to the Netherlands, especially in the Veluwe. Learn how to walk your dog safely in wolf territory with practical tips and the right equipment.
Wolves Are Back in the Netherlands
There are now nine areas in the Netherlands where one or more wolves have established their territory. The Veluwe is the largest hotspot, with six known packs. Other territories can be found in Drenthe and De Groote Heide (Brabant/Limburg).
Although the chance of encountering a wolf remains small, it’s good to know how to walk your dog safely in areas where wolves live.
1. Always Keep Your Dog on a Leash
A loose dog might unintentionally approach or challenge a wolf. Especially during the breeding season (February to April) or when pups are present, wolves are more territorial and protective.
That’s why it’s essential to keep your dog on a leash in or near wolf territories.

2. Stay Calm and Create Distance
If you see a wolf, stay calm. Do not run away — instead, slowly walk backward while keeping the wolf in sight.
Running could trigger a chase instinct. Maintain distance and give the animal space to retreat.

4. Don’t Let Your Dog Sniff Carcasses
Carcasses can attract wolves. Always stay on marked trails and avoid areas where dead wildlife is present — wolves will defend their food source.

Wolves should never get used to humans. Don’t approach to take photos, and never feed them.
If wolves lose their natural fear of humans, they become “problem wolves” that often must be removed for safety reasons.
6. Show Confidence
Wolves are shy but curious. Make yourself appear large, move calmly, and speak in a firm tone.
If a wolf comes too close (extremely rare), make noise: shout, clap your hands, or use your alarm.
